Shop & Grounds Supervisor

Williams Baptist University is seeking applicants to fill the position of shop and grounds supervisor. This position will provide total quality to operations of maintenance of college grounds, landscape, and equipment in a safe and operational condition for students, staff, and community. Shop & Grounds Supervisor performs a variety of duties in assigned area of responsibility.

Shop & Grounds Supervisor

PURPOSE
He/she serves primarily as a Shop & Grounds Supervisor in order to provide total quality to operations of maintenance of college grounds, landscape, and equipment in a safe and operational condition for students, staff, and community. Shop & Grounds Supervisor performs a variety of duties in assigned area of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS
He/she should have at least one-year experience as a Shop & Grounds Supervisor: He/she should have equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. One year of increasingly responsible landscape construction experience.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a preferred valid CDL driver’s license with a ‘P’ endorsement.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in the Shop & Grounds Supervisor’s classification perform routine skilled grounds care and repair and work on campus and equipment. Shop & Grounds Supervisor performs a variety of work on the vehicle maintenance.

EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION/BENEFITS
As agreed upon with the Administration & Board of Trustees of Williams Baptist College.

WORK SCHEDULE
Working hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and must be available to support the activities and advancement of WBC.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from the director of the Physical Plant.

DUTIES
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but not limited to, the following.
Trim lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees, flowers, and plants; prune trees and shrubs; hoe weeds and rake lawns

Operate hedger, trimmer, clipper, hand and power spray equipment, blower, sod cutter and various small hand, power, and other related ground maintenance equipment; operate truck, tractor, and motorized equipment as assigned; maintain grounds equipment and vehicles in safe operating conditions.

Perform duties in the planting, transplanting, and fertilizing of plants and shrubs

Mix spray herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides; maintain rodent control as required

Assist in mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete as required; install and repair fences and gates; construct and maintain sandboxes; assist in maintenance of playground equipment, asphalt, and concrete structures

Perform general grounds clean-up including picking up paper and trash around grounds and sweeping paved playground area as needed

Prepare minor and major adjustments, service and repair on assigned grounds equipment and fleet vehicles

May assist or substitute for equipment operator or grounds maintenance worker

Ensure compliance and adherence to safety rules and regulations; perform general clean-up at site

Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of :
Methods equipment and materials used in propagating, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns

Principles and procedures of lawn planting and cutting and chemical usage

Required to know the methods and techniques of routine maintenance and repair of grounds maintenance equipment

Operational characteristics of equipment and materials required for grounds maintenance

Safe practices involved in mixing and applying herbicides

Health and safety regulations

Principles and procedures of record keeping and basic math

Ability to:
Perform grounds maintenance and gardening work

Rake, hoe, prune, plant, mix, and pour concrete; install and repair fences and gates; sweep, mix, and spray grounds related chemicals

Perform a variety of routine preventive maintenance work including replacing locks, fuses, fixtures, sockets, drop cards, and switches; cut and replace window glass; maintain gutters as necessary

Repair and maintain garden tools and equipment

Operate, service, and make minor repairs on hand and power grounds maintenance equipment

Perform minor mechanical repair on sprinkler systems

Operate vehicles and equipment as assigned

Perform manual labor

Read and understand material data safety sheets

Provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and other staff members in a helpful, courteous, and timely manner

Lift up to 100 lbs

Maintain confidentiality of information obtained during course of work

Understand and follow oral and written instructions

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work

Work independently with limited supervision

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action

Plan and organize work to meek schedules and timeless in an environment with constantly changing priorities

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Operate and perform operator’s maintenance on a college vehicle

WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Outside environmental; subject to traveling from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, chemicals, inclement weather conditions; exposure to herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Physical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for heavy lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; operating motorized equipment or vehicles; near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity to operate a telephone; lift horizontally and vertically
