Director of Campus & Community Landscaping

Position Summary

The Director of Campus & Community Landscaping serves as a strategic and hands-on leader within the Williams Works program. This role is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the beauty and functionality of the WBU campus grounds while building and managing a student-operated lawn and landscaping service that serves the surrounding community. The director will combine operational expertise with a passion for mentorship, providing students with both technical skills and professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Campus Grounds Management

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of campus lawn and landscape maintenance, including mowing, edging, trimming, mulching, and the care of flower beds, trees, and green spaces.
  • Develop and implement a seasonal maintenance plan to ensure the campus remains attractive, safe, and inviting year-round.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor student workers assigned to the Grounds Work Station, instilling a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and pride in service.
  • Teach and enforce proper safety protocols, equipment handling, and efficient landscaping practices.
  • Manage equipment maintenance, repairs, and inventory to ensure smooth daily operations.

Community Lawn & Landscaping Services

  • Launch, manage, and grow a student-operated lawn and landscaping service serving clients within a 30-mile radius of WBU.
  • Develop marketing strategies and promotional efforts to attract and retain community customers.
  • Provide accurate project estimates, coordinate job schedules, and ensure exceptional service standards are consistently met.
  • Train students in customer service, job site professionalism, and foundational business operations.
  • Oversee billing, recordkeeping, and client communications in partnership with the Williams Works administrative team.

Williams Works Supervision

  • Provides direct supervision and evaluation of Williams Works student landscaping staff, including assigning tasks, tracking attendance, and grading performance.
  • Develops and implements training modules for students to ensure proper performance, safety procedures, and work ethic expectations.
  • Partners with the Williams Works leadership team to ensure the housekeeping program supports student learning and workforce readiness goals.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Collaborate with direct supervisor to develop, manage, and monitor the annual landscaping budget.
  • Prepares cost analyses, forecasts, and reports to ensure fiscal responsibility and efficient use of resources.
  • Evaluates vendor contracts, equipment purchases, and service agreements to optimize quality and cost-effectiveness.

Supervision

  • The Director of Campus & Community Landscaping will receive primary supervision from the Farm Manager and the Vice President for Advancement and Business Development.
  • The Director of Campus & Community Landscaping will have supervisory responsibility for Williams Works students assigned to the department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate student employees.
  • Demonstrated experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, lawn care, or related field.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to develop and implement structured schedules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of landscaping equipment operation, care, and maintenance.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to build and sustain a service-based business.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment or materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Capability to stand, walk, or operate machinery for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate standard lawn and landscaping equipment
